When it turned midnight on Friday 20th November, I was feelin’ well and truly 22.
Safe to say it came with a big dollop of “oh-my-gosh-I’m-so-old-next-year-I-will-be-twenty-three-WHAT” which I guess is inevitable for anyone on their birthday past the age of 12. The reality is we’ve been saying “Oh God I’m a grown up” (or at least I have) since we were 14, but it’s starting to look scarily true at this point.
Anyway, I started the day off the best way possible – with a lie-in. After I’d dragged myself out of my bed at midday, I did my hair and make-up, had some breakfast, and waited for my Mum to arrive. Being at uni, it’s usually been quite hard for me to see parents/family on my actual birthday seeing as it’s been on a week day for the past four years, but this year my Mum had the day off and we decided to treat ourselves to a day out.
We had some lunch, then hopped over to the local shopping centre to have a look around – and were evacuated mid-shop! Turns out the fire alarms were on the fritz and everyone had to put down their Topshop/River Island/Whatever and leave immediately. Never ones to let shopping be interrupted though, we just moved on to the next place!
I feel genuinely spoiled this year – not only did I have a really great birthday and an amazing party/night out with my friends, but I also got rather a lot of beauty stuff to play with. It’s all so pretty! Here’s a (hopefully) brief overview;
From a family friend, this set of four Nails Inc. London nail polishes in some really gorgeous shades. I put the mustard yellow one on almost straight away – it’s so nice for late autumn! I can’t decide between this brown shade or the opalescent cream next, so maybe I’ll just have to do both. Is the multi-coloured nail trend a thing yet?
The special effects glitter, I have to say, is probably one of the best glitter nail varnishes I’ve ever had. It completely covered my whole nail in just one coat; the glitter is very dense and pretty to boot!
As part of my present from my Mum, I also received these luxury beauty bits and bobs in a nice little pouch. I was made up to open this, seeing as there are some things here I’ve always wanted to try out. They’ll probably all feature in posts at some point but I have to say I am IN LOVE with the Elemis day cream and if I can afford it one day I will 100% be getting the full size!
Also shout out to my best friend for the champagne. She knows me too well. (I may have drank several glasses while dancing to Taylor Swift – 22 and putting my make-up on. No judging!)
As my main gift from the Mother unit, I got the Magnitone Barefaced sonic cleansing brush! I’ve honestly wanted a sonic cleanser for years and though the Clarisonic is pretty far out of my price range, this was on sale at the time and I thought I’d see if I could maaaaybe get it for my birthday. The theme here is that most of this stuff will feature in other posts so I won’t go into too much detail, but it’s safe to say this thing is a dream piece of beauty kit! My skin always feels so soft these days. Mmmmmmmmm. No I’m not stroking my face right now. Definitely not.
Anyway I found these real techniques brushes on offer in Boots near enough the date and decided to buy myself a birthday treat too – I’ve been desperate for a lip brush for ages and hadn’t managed to get one yet, and this eyeliner brush just seemed so interesting! I don’t think a single person I know has ever seen me without eyeliner, so I definitely saw it as an investment. It has a silicone tip so it should always stay pointed (like the wings of my eyeliner)! A bit hard to manoeuvre with at first but I’m sure I’ll get used to it.
Next is the Look Fantastic November box. I have to say I’m not in love with beauty boxes – as someone very rightly said to me, you basically just pay for a box of samples most of the time. However I thought, seeing as it’s my birthday… anyway. I haven’t tried everything in this box yet (and it will probably get its own post at some point), but I know I’ve found my soul mate at least in the shape of the Ole Henrikson foaming facial cleanser. This little bottle, combined with the Magnitone and the Elemis day cream just makes my whole day (and face) brighter!
The Korres shower gel is worth a mention too (smells and feels like you’re in a spa), though the other stuff I just haven’t really tried yet. Keep your eyes peeled for updates!
That’s about it for beauty things! So instead here’s a picture of the drinks and scones we had at a local tea room which I’ve been dying to go to basically since I started Uni, and only just managed to make my way inside. The atmosphere was really luxurious, but the prices weren’t too bad and that strawberry scone was TO DIE FOR. I was really happy that we managed to visit and had a lovely time!
Afterwards we went home for glasses of champagne and to open presents from my boyfriend (who also spoiled me!), before getting ready (one of my favourite things) for the party I held at my house later that night.
It’s such a cliché but I really felt like the luckiest girl when all my friends were there, singing happy birthday!
Getting older can sometimes feel like a sad thing – there’s nowhere near as much childish excitement, and you’re closer than you’ve ever been to being an ‘adult’ – but it’s also pretty nice to get to spend it with friends and family.
So to my 22nd birthday I happily say ‘Cheers’ and ‘see you next year’!
