“In another moment down went Alice after it, never once considering how in the world she was to get out again.”
― Lewis Carroll, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
I loved Alice in Wonderland as a child – though I liked the Disney film version best, I’m sorry to say. I always wanted to go to a party dressed as Alice, but I never had quite the right hair colour (I was always a mousy brown), and usually ended up as Hermione Granger instead. Such is life. I’m joking of course, Hermione is just as good, if not better, than Alice, but we will keep that to ourselves for now.
All of that being said, now that I’ve grown up I’ve taken a liking to the more adult characters – especially the Queens. Debenhams and the UK Blog Awards are currently running a competition to design a moodboard showing an Alice in Wonderland inspired outfit, with some excellent prizes in store that I would quite like to get my grubby little hands on – £300 to spend at Debenhams, and two tickets to the UK Blog Awards in April. There’s more information over here if you want to check it out!
So, without further ado, let me introduce you to my White Queen themed mood board (it’s rather small in the blog post – please click it to have a closer look. I’ve also inserted close-ups of the board just below):
- Miss Selfridge Textured Bardot Dress – £35
- Miss Selfridge White Swirl Embedded Case – £35
- Miss Selfridge Monochrome Crepe Duster Jacket – £35
- Miss Selfridge Gaga Pointed Court – £39
- Phase Eight Beth Necklace – £29
- Jon Richard Crystal Circle and Pearl Drop Earring – £12
- Faith Pale Pink Logo Walker Umbrella – £18
- Laura Oakes Dressing Table Floral Print Mirror – £50
- Wedgewood Tea Cup & Saucer – £40
- Sass & Belle Cream Metal Bird Earring Holder – £8
- Nina Ricci L’Elixir Eau de Parfum 50ml – £45
- Nails Inc. Aspen Nail Polish – £11
- Clinique High Impact Lip Colour – £17
I wanted to go for a modern look for the moodboard, because I think it’s almost too easy to do the classic ethereal, vintage-y Alice rendition. Of course almost the entire moodboard consists of modern white (the clue is in the name), but I wanted to add a few feminine florals to keep it from looking too modern. My White Queen will definitely be bang on trend for spring! And who can resist a slight hint of danger with a red lip, some shiny red talons, and the tantalising smell of Nina Ricci L’Elixir – one of my favourite fragrances.
I added one or two homeware items in there, because of course a Queen goes nowhere without packing some home comforts, and would not been seen dead without a mirror and a cup of tea nearby. She’s royalty dont you know daaaaaahling.
It was by complete accident that many of the clothes come from Miss Selfridge by the way, I promise. But it’s not my fault that I seem to have loved all of their items! Cut me some slack, hm?
I had a tonne of fun making this and imagining what a White Queen would wear, if she were to take a stroll through her nearest Debenhams – I found a lot of great picks on my own travels, and would definitely be picking up a few of these if I won that tantalising prize – especially that floral duster coat. Mmmmm.
Well, I hope you enjoyed this little bit of something different! Wish me luck in the competition, and don’t forget to enter it for yourselves! Show me your own moodboards in the comments if you do, even if it’s just for fun. Pretty please?
EDIT: (Guess what – I actually won!)
